Abbreviation list, etc. for Newbies--Acronyms explained

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This thread was prompted by Cynthia Yanicko's post. Add to the collection if you will:

LOL means "Laughing out loud"

BTW means "By the way"

IMHO means "In my humble opinion"

ROTFLMAO means "Rolling on the floor laughing my a-- off." (This is a Paul Milne favorite. Paul Milne is a former stockbroker who has very negative expectations with regard to Y2K consequences, as does Gary North, and a mysterious fellow named INFOMAGIC. You should be aware of these names.

Regular posters, please add to the list!

AFAIK---As Far As I Know

IIRC---If I Recall Correctly

I remember these fondly as I figured them out for myself. For all other acronyms I encounter I go to:

Takes some of the fun and mystery out of it, but....

I have been around since last October and am still not sure about Uncle Deedah. :-)

Let's not forget GI, (get it) and DGI, (don't get it.)

What is Paul Milne's Web site?

-- Novacop (Sandmann@alasbab.com), April 10, 1999.

Hallyx, or anyone else. I'm sure there are some other new arrivals to the web who would like to know about making the little :) and what they mean, as they get more involved. Do you have a link to the site that had all those different ones listed. I lost it.

Also, DWGI .... Don't Wanna Get It !!

For fun tracking the various Milne quotes visit

http://www.dejanews.com/dnquery.xp?QRY=*&DBS=2&ST=PS&defaultOp=AND&LNG =ALL&format=terse&showsort=score&maxhits=100&subjects=&groups=comp.sof tware.year-2000&authors=fedinfo*&fromdate=&todate=

There you will be able to view all of Paul Milne's comments on the comp.software.year-2000 newsgroup, to which many so-called Pollys (Pollyannas) and Doomers (Gloom and doomers) and others in between post. It tends to get rather technical though, and often bombastic.

Milne has a string of frequent baiters, and although his posts are gloomy, they are also sometimes hilarious.

Lately, Milne hasn't been posting as much, apparently 'cause it's planting season. To my knowledge, he has no Website, but has been featured and will be featured in upcoming magazines, re the Y2k computer problem.

But seriously, how many acronyms are there for gov. (government) agencies?

FERC = (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) is one I didn't know.

Not one used around here, Navy term, but very useful nonetheless: NAFOD ("NAY-fod"). No Apparent Fear of Death. As in, "Great Scot, Maynard, did you see that effing NAFOD run that red light???"

Here some other characters you may meet:

Flint - an outspoken pollyanna/doomer. Has y2k crisis identity crisis.

Y2K Pro - a growth on the ass of Doc Paulie, has its own IP address.

Mutha Nathu - the local HTML pyromaniac. Is using input from the forum to write his high school term paper.

Mr. Decker - is actually Gary North, after the Librium kicks in.

Norm - only one here with a pen up his nose. Accidentally lodged it there while carelessly adjusting his rose-colored glasses.
