World Magazine (Christian viewpoint) Y2K articles

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

World magazine, a weekly newsmagazine with a Christian perspective, covered Y2K earlier this April.

Their article on food storage was prefaced with this proviso, which shows they don't demean those who take Y2K seriously:

[Editor's note: By publishing this article, WORLD magazine is not taking the position that stockpiling in anticipation of major Y2K disruptions is something every family should do. We do not know-in fact, nobody knows-whether the cumulative effect of Y2K will be a "bump in the road" or something far more serious. We are not endorsing the companies mentioned in the story. Nor are we intentionally discriminating against the many new companies that have entered the food-storage business in the past 12-18 months. We present this article merely in an effort to serve those families among our readership who are seriously considering a food storage plan.]

Ron,

Thanks for the link. I thought they were pretty decent articles. The author (Timothy Lamer) actually seems to have done research, rather than relying on press releases.

I don't know how big World Magazine's circulation is (I am not familiar with this publication), but if a few more people decide to prepare now, rather than later, they just did everyone a service.

I, too, thought it was a good article. The most important point from Larry Burketts quotes "... don't wait until december to prepare."

Also noted:

"But as Christian Financial Concepts president Larry Burkett, a leading voice on Y2K matters, points out, the new rating says that instead of 50 percent of Japanese systems being noncompliant, "only" a third are. Mr. Burkett believes that by the time the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, a fourth of Japanese systems will remain noncompliant."

Does Larry and this author really understand what this means? It certainly fits(altough Larry/this article does't elaborate) in some place between the Yourdon and North scenarios. They don't seem to realize what that 25% means.

But overall good.

"If Y2K hurts Japan and other key trading partners, it will at some point harm the United States as well." (snip)

There is the core of this issue for me. We can argue all day long about how much will get fixed here in the USA, but if the world economy tanks we can't avoid it forever, not to mention shortages of certain goods. $$$$
