LOL Hilarious debate thread raging at the polly site

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Synopsis: Doc Paulie is allergic to cross-posted text. Flint is burning on both ends, simultaneously taking verbal insults from the polly and doomer camps. Uncle Deedah is doing his best to provide comic relief. Lisa is playing the role of instigator (and doing a pretty good job). Myself, I'm not getting into this one - it's too much fun from viewing it from afar!

Doc Paulie attempts a standup routine (pants down version)

My goodness, these folks don't play well together... Let's not let them play with sharp objects, OK?

I feel better about this forum.

Thanks, everyone, for your considerable efforts to keep this site operating on an adult level. Of course we don't agree on everything, but we can discuss it reasonably, for goodness sakes.

Jon,

Do you think that Gnat Ray and Sissyman are reasonable?

We get along fine. It's just Flint who can't figure out where he belongs. No offense Flint.

Why does anyone even bother to answer the posts of trolls? You and I are not going to change our minds and niether are they, so what is the point of the arguments? It seems like a terrible wate of time.

In recent weeks the number of URLs from related newsapaer and other media pertaining to Y2k has dropped dramatically. It takes time to research these articles, read them and then post to the forum. This is HOW WE SHARE INFORMATION.

There are a lot of people that come to this forum to get that information. It is like a One Stop Store, everything is here at Yourdon Mart. The only way this can be achieved is for those that have the extra time, to do the reserach and bring it back to the forum.

Instead of wasting time arguing with people that are not going to change their opinions about Y2k, would it not be better to invest that time in research work for the good of the Yourdonites?

And I can go a step futher and encourage the troll people to do the same. Use your time wisely for your cause and leave the name calling and bickering to the children.

Ray - One thing at the idio, err, trolls forum is that an IP address is posted with each message. I'm going to e Ed and see if we can get that here, maybe part of the signature line. Nice way to force these multiple-personaliy punks out of hiding, yet still stay anon. <:)=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), April 10, 1999.

Sysman- I noticed that, and kinda like it.

Yo Flint- Do let me know if Doc actually posts something beyond a list of predictions that have not been met. I have abit of problem with the theory that, since the predictions came from the "doombrood" that all you need to do is show that they didn't happen (at least publicly) then the whole premise is false. I can think of several counter arguments, the first of which is that fiscal rollovers are only going to show inside the coral so to speak and the existence of them will not be seen outside. Also, except in specific cases (the UI kluge debacle), fiscal failure is NOT a show stopper, never was, and those of us who were thinking never expected it to be.

Anyhow, I still need to congratulate you for your approach, which begins to look like an agnostic one to me. You are being a bit too logical for the folks here, and WAY too careful and specifically logical for the folks over there. Here's hoping you can find somewhere that the middle ground has some more room to stand, for your own comfort.

Chuck:

I tend to regard the quiet passing of several spike dates as a good sign, because I trust the people here who point out that at those times, certain blocks of code really did encounter 00 dates for the first time. There are probably multiple reasons for the lack of impact so far: remediation fixed some of them, and most of them turned out to be easy to patch or work around, and the amount of code actually affected was less than anticipated.

I think Yourdon wrote "at that moment, all y2k speculation will end" because based on his experience, he sincerely expected big, visible problems.

By and large, I'm more comfortable here. On this forum, it seems to me that people are exaggerating genuine problems, whereas on the other forum, people are simply denying the problems altogether. Exaggeration is a matter of degree and susceptible to data and analysis, whereas denial is a brick wall. Of course, this forum has its share of rabid nutballs, but the number of people who think rather than react emotionally is much higher here.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), April 10, 1999.

Sysman, go for it!!

I can understand an individual wanting anonymity and I accept that. The problem lies in the fact that some of these worms simply post their thoughts under many aliases thus misleading folks.
