Radio Y2K, Intensive Gardening workshop, and Official Oakland Y2K preps

Dear Friends:

Tom just listened to Michael Toms interviewing Jay Earley and him on New Dimensions Radio on KALW. The interview actually turned out better than he thought it had, so he asked me to let you know when you could hear it. It should be airing on the following stations:

Also, for anyone interested in urban gardening for Y2K: an expert on Intensive Food Growing will be talking about Y2K in Palo Alto Saturday.

As described by Larry Shook in his article, Y2K and Our Big Bet, in Awakening, The Upside of Y2K, John Jeavons is quite an extraordinary expert on ecologically sound, soil-building ways of growing large amounts of food, complete with compost crops, on tiny (or large, if you'd like) areas of land. John is long-time executive director of Ecology Action -- with its research gardens in Willits, CA, its organic garden store & education center (Common Ground) in Palo Alto and people using its biointensive methods in urban and rural settings all over the world. His book, How to Grow More Vegetables*, has been translated into 7 languages and is used in over 100 countries.

(*AND Fruits, Nuts, Berries, Grains, and Other Crops than you ever thought possible on less land than you can imagine)

Next Saturday, April 10, John will be coming to Common Ground to talk with people and offer two classes that would be very useful to people interested in Y2K and food growing. Each workshop costs $14.

These are Common Ground's descriptions of the classes:

10:30 - 12:30 - DOUBLE DIGGING/GARDEN BED PREPARATION with JOHN JEAVONS. Loosening the soil 24 inches deep is easy if you know how! Plants grow better, the garden needs less water and weeds come out more easily. The class includes a hands-on demonstration at a near-by garden.

2:00 - 4:00 - COMPLETE DIET MINI-FARMING IN THE Y2K with JOHN JEAVONS. Does the Y2K bug, or just your desire for better nutrition, have you wondering if you could live off your land? This class will show you how to plan a garden or mini-farm that will be healthy, highly productive and nutritious as well as truly sustainable, in the smallest space possible.

Both classes may continue past their scheduled times with questions, extended discussions and demonstrations afterwards. Advance registration is highly recommended but not required. You can register and prepay in advance by mail or in person. Seniors and low-income persons may request a $3 discount on classes. All classes begin at the store: Common Ground, 2225 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, 94306 Phone: (650) 328-6752.

Classes are accessible by public transportation. From the East Bay that means BART to Embarcadero. Muni N Judah to Caltrain @ 4th & King, CalTrain to the California Ave. stop & a walk to El Camino.
