Note that there is another diference beside price between the two models and that is the output for television. While the european one has a PAL output the american offers a NTSC one.

Nikon is quiet in the newsgroups but the one thing they have posted (multiple times in the last few days) is that your warranty is only valid in the region where you purchased the camera. This was specifically wrt US users buying Japanese models (since they came out sooner).

Besides, is it really cheaper if you don't lie to customs to avoid VAT?
