Epson Printers: Photo 700 or wait for "750"?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I've decided on an Epson Photo 700 printer (although I may move up for the size capability on the EX - I'm in teaching and the large format may be useful). Is the Photo 750 on the horizon or should I just jump now. Issues might be close-out pricing on a 700 or even better performance on the next generation. This is for personal use so cost is a factor so I won't be able to replace quickly (although I anticipate that even if "replaced" in the product line the 700 performance will be more than acceptable.) I have a laser printer so the usage will be primarily photos and color and not text so I'm willing to put up with the low speed, etc.

The 750 is released in the US on April 15th. I'd say it's worth the wait, gets tons of rave reviews! Think I'll get one myself

I believe that there's another model on the horizon - Epson Stylus Photo 1200 - that's essentially the 750 at 11x17 (like the EX is to the 700). Epson UK's web site has the data sheet on this now, though there's nothing for sale in the US yet. I would guess that in a few weeks the 1200 will be available is the US as well. I'm waiting to see a sample from the 750, but from what I've read I'd strongly suggest the 750 or holding for the 1200. the 750 is about $287 from Insight and in a week or two CompUSA should have them.

The 750 is faster (about 1.5x the 700 on 4x6 and 8x10 photos; it has more nozzles than the 700) has variable dot sizes and a smaller minimum dot (6 picoliters) and can print with .12" margins on all sides. Given the relatively small price difference between 700 and 750, why not get the better and faster output?

I got a direct response with same basic advice. When I asked, I didn't realize the release date was so close. I think I'll wait, in fact, the other indicated he had one coming sooner. It's a moot point now. I'm starting to consider the larger paper size of the EX follow-on. I'm going into teaching and the larger size output might be handy for bulletin board items, etc.

Thanks for the responses. CG

I have a Epson Photo 700 and a Photo 750. I have had the 750 since April 15. The 750 is much faster than the 700 and the pictures are great. Although you need to within a couple of inches to tell the difference between the 700 and 750 output.
