Possible effects of Y2k on troops overseas

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

With tens of thousands of troops overseas and more on the way despite all the denials coming out of Washington, won't they be in a very precarious situation towards the end of this year? The reliance on computer systems to direct logistics, supplies, equiptment, etc. for these troops has to be a massive undertaking and could be threatened by Y2k related problems. Imagine our people in hostile territories without good communications, food, ammo, etc. Could this be a suicide mission? (The Defense Dept. lost all credibility in my estimation when they decreed "Gulf War Syndrome" was psychosymatic).

If the leadership considers the troops to be ultimately expendable, any thoughts of what will happen if Y2K goes all wrong haven't been given any considerations.

Even if our political leadership doesn't give a tinker's damn about the troops, hopefully the military leadership still does. Of course, they've all been appointed by that same civilian leadership. Still, they should be keeping tabs on Y2K and there certainly must be a few military planners working on "What ifs?".

If things go totally wrong, will the troops be pulled home? Will it be orderly or will it look like Dunkirk? Or will the worst happen and we'll have to see US forces face "Little Big Horns" in various location around the world?

Here's hoping for rational thinking and troop pullbacks. But I'm not altogether convinced we won't see one or more Custer's Last Stand replays.

WW Yes indeed. Got to be one of three things. 1. Having our troops caught over seas is part of a post y2k plan. 2. Our military machine is actually compliant and we've been led to believe it's not(for whatever reason). 3. There is a huge and disasterous disconnect at the top. Any other possibilities? I'd vote for: no.3, There is a huge and disasterous disconnect at the top(of most politicians' brains).

I'd go with #3 as well - this is another one of those situations that the adminstration has gotten itself into and for which it hasn't a clue in the way of solutions - short of pulling all of the troops back to the states, which it cannot afford to do on a number of different levels.

Just MHO:

There has been a HUGE 'DISCONNECT' AT THE TOP, ever since the 'Hill- Billary Joint Staff' moved to DC from Arkansas.

The only 'Prayer's Chance in Hell' our overseas troops have, is if the 'Professional Military Leaders' in DC stand up for the Constitution and our troops, and overide the 'Hill-Billary military advisors' and insist on bringing our troops back to the mainland prior to December, 1999........

As I said in the beginning.........Just MY Humble Opinion.........
