Mid-roll change

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I have a Canon Elan IIe. A function which allows me to rewind the film by leaving the leader out is provided. The problem is : if I want to use again the same film, is the camera able to detect which was the last position used, and advancing the film at the next one (for instance, if I've used 14 posiitons, will it advance the film directly to the 15th) ? Logically, the answer should be yes...

Thank you !

Sorry, but the answer is no. YOU have to remember where you were and manually advance the film (i.e. shoot with the lens cap on) until you get there.

What I do is before I rewind the film I look at the frame number. When the film is reloaded, I then put the lense cap back on, set the lense to MF (to keep it from searching in the dark) and then shoot till the same frame number comes up again. I usually keep the half exposed roll of film in the original container with a little piece of paper that says somthing like "Set to 12". David Bindle had a comment about the Elan IIe in Photo.net/EOS-3 that the Infra Red used to count sprocket holes in the film whas pretty accurate. I havn't had a problem yet with partially double exposed film in the few rolls that I have done.

I use a "Sharpie" (an indelible marker that writes on glass, plastic, etc.and is available at office stores) to write the number of frames used on the film cassette and also on the cap or side of the plastic cassette case. That way when I am fishing around for a specific film I will know immediately if I want to pick a roll that may only have 5 or 10 frames left or whether I want to start with a fresh roll.
