34bits for 8bits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have a pentium pro 200 with 96 RAM and a Umax powerlook II with transfer adpter...I'm scanning images with 36bits colors but I can't work with 36bits in photoshop 4 and I have to reduce the mode to 8bits for channel. How can I work with 36bits for channel???

thanks

First of all, you don't have 36 bits per channel. You have a TOTAL of 36 bits, which is made up of 12 bits per RED, GREEN, BLUE channel. Most scanner software can only output 8 bits per channel into Photoshop. Photoshop 5.0 can handle more bits, but as I understand it the only way to get the extra bits into Photoshop is to use the special TIFF/48 file format that can actually handle a total of 48 bits (16 bits/channel). Some scanner software gives you the option of saving in this file format, some doesn't. Check out Imaging-resource.com - they have link to a page just on "bit depth" that helps explain. Good luck.

Oops! Sorry for giving the wrong web site for the page on bit depth. You can find it at www.halftone.co.uk/tech/filmscan and look for the link marked "bit depth".
