Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona. February, 1999.
This is NOT the safest place to be hiking after sunset!

Oops! That should be Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument...sort of obvious, I guess.

The soft sunset colors, distant mountains, and pipe organ cactus on the left are far more interesting than the pipe organ which portrudes front and center frame. My eyes keep moving from left to right, top to bottom, trying to find a way around it to enter the image.

The cactus which dominates the foreground is an organ pipe cactus (Lemaireocereus marginatus). The cactus on the left is a saguaro cactus(Carnegiea gigantea). Perhaps it would be more exciting if I told you this is a stop-action photo? Yeah, that's it. I sprinted toward the (Lemaireocereus marginatus), leapt into the air, and snapped the F5's shutter 1/250 second before landing amongst the treacherous barbs...the film: Velvia. The lens: Nikkor.

Jeff,

There's just not enough interest in the obtrusive organ pipe cactus for it to be blocking so much of the frame.

I agree that the foreground is too dark. Perhaps fill flash on the foreground cacti would have helped?

Jeff: The cactus is too big and overpowers the entire image and is not very pleasing. Although the background has a peaceful feel to it, because of the cactus, it does not come across easily and the viewer has to really look for it. Bahman.

I like near/far images, but I agree with the comments above, the center catus pokes my eyeballs.

This is a very controversial picture. So far, nobody seems to like it. I beg to differ - and find the unusual perspective interesting. The fact that there is "no way around" this cactus in the foreground emphasizes it's huge size.
