Geyserville Y2K Committee -- March 16 meeting Sheriff's Lt. Bruce Rochester described the Sheriff's Dept.'s Y2K plan: All deputies will be on duty, with detectives in uniform, patrolling 2/car (the department doesn't have enough cars for all its deputies to patrol 1/car), from Friday, Dec. 31, to Sun., Jan. 2 or until Mon., Jan. 3, if that's declared a federal holiday, as has been proposed). The Sheriff's Department is Y2K compliant as far as computer systems, jails, SWAT teams, patrol cars & radios. The county's 911 system is also. The department is gearing up for millennium parties. Geyserville Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Dean Turbeville will have all volunteers and engines available; the trucks are radio-dispatched & won't have Y2K problems. GVFD is more concerned about an earthquake, which could knock down bridges, causing injuries and separating them from a number of their constitutents, than about Y2K, whose most immediate difficulty is likely to be a plethora of false alarms. However, he noted that the wineries have plenty of water the department can use if needed. Water company owner Harry Bosworth has replaced all date-sensitive hardwareand software in his computer system, and his suppliers have stated their equipment is Y2K compliant. However, he has no backup generator, and so is dependent on PG&E for power. The tank that supplies most of the town holds just two days' worth of water (less if Bosworth warns people that there's an emergency and they need to conserve, since most immediately fill their bathtubs and drain the tank in a hurry!). Our next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at the Ed Park. A major agenda item will be the draft of the material we will make available to the community beginning at the April 6 Planning Committee meeting. Suzanne Meeks
