Emergency officials have an early warning system

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

It seems that since most of our emergency coordination officials are in denial, and not willing to formulate any serious contingency plans, they will rely on the "believe it when we see it" warning system:

"Emergency officials will be watching closely as countries along the International Dateline bring in the New Year. What happens in major cities on the western Pacific Rim could provide an early indication of what's to come for the United States."

To paraphrase from Gary North, "That is like going down to the beach with a pair of binoculars to see the tidal wave coming in. You might be able to see it coming, but the idea is to get out of the way!"

They have contingency plans, all right! They just are not letting the public in on the plans. It is to be a big surprise!! As if we need any more of those.

Peter Jennings, at ABC World News Tonight may help them.

Caught a quick mention on Nightline last night, that at the milennium turn he plans to do an "ABC Special" for 27 hours, watching as each time zone goes through the change. It was partly to watch the parties AND, as stated onair, to watch for effects of the Y2K bug.

Guess most the world will "watch" that one.
