Image-resource missed the #1 selling manufacture: SONY

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Tis extremely strange that the imaging-resource has NO mention of SONY as a digital camera - why should they, as they probably are the #1 selling digital cam today (i.e. mavica 91)

Sony mauvicas may sell well, but they sure suck compared to the competition. Hordes of ignorant zombie consumers who buy substandard merchandize just because it has a sony label will ensure strong sales for some time. I'm not sure Sony would keep sending this site free review cams if they reported things honestly.

"The inferior image quality, laughable floppy storage technology, seriously dated resolution sizes, and outlandishly inflated prices, all conspire to produce a camera that only sells because of the Sony brandname."

Sony has been popular because of ease of data transfer to PC not just because of Sony name. Sony name and quality in general might have added to their market share, but that is not the primary reason of their success. I agree with the fact image quality of FD81 or FD91 is not equal to some of the other cameras on the market, but you can find weaknesses on many other popular cameras including the Nikon CoolPix 900. The new Sony D700 has a respectable specification, as an Electrical Enginner with master degree in Microprocessor design, I have to say the two cameras that I can not wait to get my hand on, are Sony D700 & Canon PowerShot Pro 70 (I will buy both). I also have to say the new C-2000 & CoolPix 950 look like very interesting products.

I was assigned the task of selecting a digital camera for use by my department of about 25 people, some of which are of marginal computer literacy. After reviewing all the picture storage processes of digital cameras, I picked the Sony because of it's ease of use. The quality of the pictures is good enough for our needs, and the people who have used it so far are happy with it. And it's growing in popularity. Don't belittle the advantages of floppy disk storage.

(But when I bought one for myself I got the Toshiba PDR-M1.)
