Too many negative answers on this bulletin board!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have read many solid, good Y2K suggestions from those who contributed their good Y2K ideas. However it really saddens me to read all the negative responses to the great Y2K ideas. Only a couple may agree with the writer, but at least a dozen and a half disagree with the writer and tell the writer his or her idea stinks and is no good.

I personally have posted some really good Y2K ideas, to have them ripped to shreds by the negative bunch that lurks here. I'm very disappointed with the negativism on this board and I have decided to stop making anymore Y2K suggestions. In fact I have decided to not visit this site anymore on a daily basis. Even one disgusted poster mentioned this..."If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at al"!!!

If the negativism stops, I may again make some good suggestions, but for now, I'm keeping them to myself. I'm just tired of having my good sugesstions ripped apart by those who think they know it all!!!

Adios, amigos!!!!

Dear Tired of...

Please don't run away and pout. Listen to what I have to say.

"I'm just tired of having my good suggestions ripped apart".

When I first started posting on this board, I thought it would be like most if not all the rest. Posted my suggestions without enough research and validation. Lordy, like to set my computer on fire when I read the responses. Hurt the heck out of my feelings, too. Damned ingrates. Here I had this wonderful idea and they threw it out.

This particular forum has one of the toughest audiences in the world waiting on you. They (like the rest of the civilians) have been lied too so much that if you present ANYTHING without validation, you're toast. And they'll argue with anyone...including themselves if nobody will rise to the bait.)

You can refuse to post if you want. You'll be missing something...the feeling of acceptance when one of the old regulars comments on your post. That "good catch" is worth a lot. Not because of 'acceptance' but because win or lose, you did a good job bracing your arguement or position. That means you did your homework. I haven't seen any of your posts so I don't know how well you document or even if your mental edges are honed enough. Stop and think back...did you present facts with backup...or did you throw in supposition without calling it just that? Supposition is OK if you label it as such and state how you arrived at that. No WAG allowed here.

" If you can't stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen." Mr. Truman said that almost 50 years ago. It's still appropriate.

Error in my post---should read 'feeling of accomplishment'. My mind got way ahead of my fingers and I missed it in proof.

-- Lobo (Hiding@woods.com), March 19, 1999.

Adios,

Speaking of negativism Adios, the only thing I've seen from you lately is how the forum sucks, and you keep threatening to leave. I told you to take a break for a while, but you keep coming back bitching because you enjoy it. So either shit or get off the pot!

-- @ (@@@.@), March 19, 1999.

Tired off, You're right! Just look at just two anwers to your post and I can see what you're talking about! I'm also thinking of taking a hike. I have better things to do then read all this negative crap!

See you later, alligator!

After a while crocodile!

Hey, hey, hey, I gotta go, Yogie!

Adios to you to, my Y2K Amigo!

All right, kids. Time for your nap now.

-- Lobo (Hiding@woods.com), March 19, 1999.

Well, there we go again! Another one! These yoyo's still DGI!!!! Negative means Negative!!!

I also have been getting sick and tired of the "know it alls". In fact, my wife told me to just drop this site from my bookmarks.

She too is tired of it!

Goodbuy, y'all!

-- Y2K (Y2K@anonymous.com), March 19, 1999.

Y2K is an inherently negative issue, tired of. Things will either turn out normal -- or they won't. You shouldn't have expected to hear much good news at a place where people are preparing for Y2K.

You might find suggestions more to your liking at the Web site of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion.

See! There you go again!!

That's negative posting about negative posts. Think positive!

'Three steps forwards, two steps backwards.' Is that a positive or negative statement?

-- (maxims@words.com), March 19, 1999.

Yes, I too have been a victim of nothing but negative answers. I think I will join "Tired Off" also.

What is really sad is that the "know it alls" think they know it all, when they don't know sh*t!!! They give stupid answers that don't even make any sense!

I also feel like I have been wasting my time posting good Y2K ideas.

I think I'm going to do all my good ideas and just forget about contributing on this forum. All the answers really suck!

-- Freddie the Freeloader (freddie@aol.com), March 19, 1999.

What would we be like if we printed rosey posts daily? Would there be a need for a forum like this? Would our minds be challenged to seek the truth other than what is spoon fed by government spokespersons and media sound bites?

Mr. K ****thinking about it***

-- Mr. Kennedy (up@night.now), March 19, 1999.

Well, heck! At least your getting responses!! I can't seem to get any!!! This BB has a "click" and if you're not part of it, then OH WELL. I'm out of here, too. From my heart, though, Good luck to all!

-- iBEgone2 (ja@aol.com), March 19, 1999.

Gee, what a worthwhile thread. (???) Oops, there I go being negative again. Can't have that. Tired of, if your ideas were so good then they couldn't have been "ripped to shreads", although us local hyenas do like to give it a try. It's more productive for us all to be critical of each others' ideas, rather than to just agree and stroke each other's egos. Just take it is given that you're one of the club, unless your posts are intentionally disruptive or disingenuous. Freddy, I think some of your contributions have been just fine, maybe their answers sucked because they didn't know as much about it as you, or maybe you're generally a little hostile towards those who respectfully disagree. ? iBegone, yes there is a clique here, and being pretty much out of it hasn't stopped me posting most days for the last six months. So don't let it worry you. I wonder whyever there might be excess negativity on a y2k forum, y2k being such a helpful happy joyous occurance.!?@

-- humptydumpty (no.6@thevillage.com), March 19, 1999.

Noooooo- donn't go. Yes, there are definitely "cliques" on this forum, and I'm not part of one, and yes, some people only seem to respond to some others posts, but that doesn't make it a useless forum. Just the sheer diversity of people, opinions and places represented here is stagering. the ability to share info and insights from all over the world is truly amazing. Check out the recent post on where are you all from? Is it perfect? Not at all. I wish that people were allowed to state their thoughts and that if others disagreed, they did so respectfully. There is no need to insult others for their beliefs. I would hope that we could "agree to disagree" but not rip eachother to shreds. However, for me personally, I know very few others with any interest in Y2k at all, so the chance to read this volume of posts about it is wonderful.

-- anita (hillsidefarm@drbs.com), March 19, 1999.

This IS a FORUM. NOT a place where everyone must have the same conclusion.

-- SCOTTY (BLehman202@aol.com), March 19, 1999.

Someone mentioned a "click" on this BB. Whose in the "click,"? God, I haven't heard that word since high school. People come and go on this forum it makes no difference to anyone of us who comes and stays or who leaves. It's called freedom!

-- Click (Click@click.com), March 19, 1999.

Better leave God out of this. He has nothing to do with this forum!

-- GI (Try2GI@aol.com), March 19, 1999.

If you click on "About" on the New Answers page, this is what you'll find:

"This forum is intended for people who are concerned about the impact of the Y2000 problem on their personal lives, and who want to discuss various fallback contingency plans with other like-minded people. . ."

The "like-minded people" who've been on this forum a long time have been discussing "various fallback contingency plans" (and related matters) for many months. Most ideas presented have already been hashed to death at least once, usually several times, sometimes on the same day, because presenters haven't checked previous threads. It gets a bit frustrating. Other ideas are instantly judged because the old-timers know their subject intimately. I guess the bottom line is your computer is much like a TV in that it has a "channel-changer" and an "off" button.

And if you think this is bad, go hang out on the North forums for a while.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), March 19, 1999.

Just to be difficult, I do not find this to be a "negative" site. I read several times daily, trusting that I will find the information I need to know to make POSITIVE plans for our family's future.

I can't think of anything more negative than to be unprepared for reality. Whether information is considered "positve" or "negative" depends on one's frame of reference.

I am slowly learning that people will pointlessly fight others over these perceptions of reality. I join with the others in suggesting that you stop wasting everyone's time trying to argue about the efforts to find facts that don't fit your preferred scenario.

-- housemouse (jgj@nevermind.net), March 19, 1999.

Well this is why its going to be so bad! We can't take it, and most won't even listen to it! C,mon PEOPLE keep posting weather it hurts or not, take the punches and get back in there and POST.

Learn now! I'm sure its going to be harder to handle once the ball drops! Everyone have a great day :o)

-- Confused (Confused@the woods.com), March 19, 1999.

It's not a "clique" that resides here, but a "cabal"... BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Just kidding. Sorry you guys are going to pick up your marbles and go home, but that's life. One of the things I love about this place is the fact that everything posted gets gone over with an intellectual chainsaw... that's the best way I know of to see if an idea stands on its own merits or not.

-- sparks (wireless@home.com), March 19, 1999.

This thread is identical to the discourse at our last homeowners association meeting, an hour after the bar was opened....but without a fistfight.

-- Charles R. (chuck_roast@trans.net), March 19, 1999.

I appreciate this forum as it has made learning so much easier. I take what information I feel is valuable and reject that which I feel is only an attempt to excite and bring needless worry and fear. I am glad to have the chance to make decisions about my future (even if it is not that long). My thanks to all who contribute the informative threads that make my learning so much easier. I bless you for taking the time and making the effort to keep us informed. One thing I have learned over years of living through many traumatic times is that we each make decisions for ourselves. If some people don't want to be informed they can watch the six o'clock news....others will use the forums and use the information to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. I am glad I "got it". I have some supplies...and the new baby chicks are doing great! The rain is watering the garden and the cellar supply is growing slowly but surely.

-- old gramma (gotitincalif@webtv.net), March 19, 1999.

For some reason, this thread struck me as very funny, today. Thanks for the laugh, Old Git, I couldn't agree more.

-- Tricia the Canuck (jayles@telusplanet.net), March 19, 1999.

If you can't handle just talking about the possibilities regard this issue, imagine what it's going to be like if this personally affects you in the future!

I hate talking about how to handle my taxes with my accountant, but I do it anyways to play it safe. I hate talking about how my estate will be handled when I pass on, but nevertheless I talk to my attorney and have him draw up a will.
