How to get Sharpest Focus with Cool Pix

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Reading about the new Coolpix 950 I learned it has more focusing steps than the older model. Do I get less than sharp images because the image is in between 2 steps? I am taking pictures of glass paperweights using a tripod. Is there a way to find the location of the point of focus other than trial & error?

I think the big motivation for the increase in focus resolution was the fact that the 950 has more sensors on a same-size CCD as the 900. But, it would be interesting to fix the camera on a target with the LCD on to force a continuous focus, and see how much target movement is required to generate a focus change. My suspicion is that it is much more critical at close distances.
