how about an update on the new pump that the "other guys have but wouldnt sell me!?" for the record, I've been having a LOT OF PROBLEMS PUMPING THIS THING UP! I talked to you personaly, and you sent me a new leather plunger which seems cheap compared to the one originaly sent with the lamp! I used it for about two minutes, then took it off and put the old one on! thanks for sending the extra mantles tho. I really believe you want to make us happy, you seem so nice! I also ordered the stove, but have not yet received it!

Why?

Ed, repeat after me:

"I NEED a Coleman lantern... I WILL buy a Coleman lantern... Coleman lanterns are EASILY pumped up... spare parts are STILL readily available..."

Seriously.

Hi Sparks, All,

I have Coleman lanterns (one gas and one kerosene) and 2 Petromax lanterns. The Petromax are harder to pump, initially (you really have to whack that leather to get it supple enough to seal). But once you know , it's okay.

But the Petromax puts out a lot more light than the Coleman, isn't much, if any, noisier (I heard that complaint before mine arrived and now can't figure out what they were talking about), and can use many different fuels.

I've always been leery of using the Coleman gas lantern in the house, but I have no such qualms with the Petromax.

sparks, if you have been reading my earlier posts, you would know I WENT FISHING WITH A GUY THAT HAD A COLEMAN, HE WENT THROUGH SIX MANTLES, EACH ONE LASTED ABOUT THREE MINUTES, AND WHEN WE CALLED IT QUITS, HE THREW THE THING IN THE LAKE!

-- ed (edrider007@aol.com), March 18, 1999.

Yes Ed, and if you'd BOTHERED TO READ ONE OF MY RESPONSES TO THAT PARTICULAR THREAD YOU'D HAVE KNOWN THAT TOUCHING THE MANTLES BEFORE THEY'RE LIT WILL CAUSE THEM TO DISINTEGRATE WHEN USED, WHICH IS UNDOUBTEDLY WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOUR FRIEND TRIED TO TIE THEM ONTO THE LANTERN IN THE DARK, ON THE LAKE, IN A BOAT, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

Now I'll stop shouting if you will.

-- sparks (wireless@home.com), March 19, 1999.

I will stop shouting. for the record, we were not in a boat. we were on shore. he probably did touch the mantles, tho. but what I remember is they kept falling off.

to watchful:re: why? what in the hell does that mean? why did you order the stove, or what? today, I received the stove, and it works great! a very simple, heat producing product. can cook on it, or use it to heat a room, thats WHY.

-- ed (edrider007@aol.com), March 19, 1999.

Why ed? Why is it so difficult to keep the saga of Ed and the Unruly Petromax in a single thread??? This forum is getting too blasted busy as it is. For gosh sakes, choose a thread and keep it there. Or (in a departure from my normal reasoned civility) are you actually Mr. Ed, the horses a**. (Sorry but after being away a week, I getting puchy just trying to find relevant stuff...)

I've had 3 Petromax lanterns (from Diana -- www.petromax.com) for about 8 months now. My primary use is for camping but I am thankful that I have 'em for Y2K.

Initially I had some problems pumping it up, but after the 2nd use, everything works just great.

These lanterns are incredible! The light that they put out is much better than the Coleman lanterns and the quality and finish blow the Coleman away. I know that the petromax is more money but in my opinion, it's well worth it.

The people at petromax are really nice and helpful but a couple of my friends ordered lanterns and stoves and it took 2 or 3 weeks to get them. When I got mine it took 3 days! I guess the y2k demand is to blame... A friend of mine from work just got his order and he got a pretty cool looking metal case for it. I checked their web page and there's no picture of it. I got a nylon case with all of mine.

I have never used gasoline or coleman fuel in mine. I just use kerosene. I am a firefighter and would never allow even a small amount of gasoline inside our home. It's way too volatile.

Does anyone have any opinions on the petromax.com stoves? I want to buy 2 (for y2k -- NOT camping).

Thanks!

-- ed (edrider007@aol.com), March 21, 1999.

Mr Ed,

Now that you're finished with your tantrum, let's take a moment and review the sequence of posts - the sequence that provided the basis of my out of character comment.

Wasn't it on 3/1 you told us that you finally got it going, that you were impressed and you wouldn't trade it. We all cheered? Then come 3/10 you tell us you sent it back (and I'll quote from the topic) for a "fefund" (Since I'm the only one who makes spelling mistakes as he types I am humbled and my congratulations on your achievement of perfection.)

Obviously you think the participants on this forum are idiots, because you then start this thread complaining about the item that you aleady returned.

Mr. Ed, your comments adequately demonstate what you are. My sincerest sympathy. (Remember with hard work and the help of friends you can overcome your arrested development.)

Good Luck jh

-- john hebert (jt_hebert@hotmail.com), March 22, 1999.

sorry I had a tantrum. and your right, I did say "fefund". kicked myself in the ass for it for days. I do hate spelling mistake's, can spot them a mile off. I REALLY hate it when I catch MYSELF!

-- ed (edrider007@aol.com), March 22, 1999.

and I was going to send it back, but then pulled it out and starting fooling with it again. still got it, still cant pump it up easily. can get it going alright, but to much work required.
