Temporary Fixes

CNN put this article out saying that the majority of the Y2K fixes that are being done are a 'band aid' for the problem. And that these fixes will not be permanent (stop working within a generation) However, someone in the article mentioned that he was disappointed that the 'fixers' weren't using a permanent method to fix the problem.

I was wondering what that permanent method was, and whether or not it is the method beind used to repair Power stations (nuclear or other).

I believe the story you are reffering to was talking about the difference between "Windowing" the "quick" fix and "Date Expansion" the "Real Fix". Windowing works for a fixed number of years 10 or more as set by the Piviot date, Date Expansion is where the full four digits are used ie: 1999 or 2000.

Sean,

The entire power sector is under extreme pressure to show readiness within a few more months. I think it is reasonable to assume that they will use virtually *any* method to achieve that, if they can. A larger question is, what commonality of fixes are being implemented and how will that impact the connectedness of all the providers?
