Tricolored Heron

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

I spent three days photographing at "Ding" Darling in Sanibel two weeks ago, and have begun scanning and printing the best shots. Kodak Portra 160VC, Minolta 600si, Minolta 400mm f/4.5 with Minolta 1.4 TC, Gitzo 1227 tripod.

I'm pretty happy with this shot, in spite of the dark background. The reflection almost shows the bird's plumage better than the main image! -Ross

The dark background helps to make the heron stand out (no pun intended!!!) in this shot. The reflection is wonderful! On my screen, the head of the heron looks fuzzy while the body seems to be very much in focus with lots of detail. This could be due to subject movement or perhaps depth of field.

Some day I'll have to get down to Ding Darling ... to get this kind of shot of the herons around here you need a 1000 mm lens! lkj

I'm afraid I not fond of this one. The bright reflection makes it seem unbalanced. If the head part in the reflection were backgrounded by dark as well, I think it would work better.
