Power Sources for Olympus 620l

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi,

I just purchased an Olympus 620L and had a few questions concerning both the optional AC adapter for this camera as well as an aftermarket NiMH power source.

1. When using Olympus's AC adapter, do the NiMh batteries have to remain inside the camera? If they don't have to be and are left in, will this cause damage to batteries or is circuit to them cut off when AC is used?

2. If NiMh batteries are in camera when AC adapter is used....do the batteries receive any sort of charge?

3. I also purchased an aftermarket (Samsonite is the brand)external pattery pack. From the description it appears to be NiMh battery pack. It puts out 6 volts but thats all the desciption it gives. It comes with charger (5-8 hr. charge) and another cord to run from charged battery pack to camera. This cord on one end is terminated with a 4 way plug (one which fits into Oly. camera.) It appears that the polarity of Smasonite plug is "+" in the middle ("-" on outside) yet Olypus camera makes no mention of their polarity either on camera or booklet. My question is is 6 volts alright for Oly 620L camera and is center "+" polarity alright for it? If the answers are yes, do you see any potential problem to camera in using this external battery pack, which is approx 5 inches x 3 inches? Thanks!

I just wanted to add to my original comment, that I tried "aftermarket" Samosonite brand (which is actually made by Photocor) external battery pack in my D-620L camera. It appears to work fine and I tried it with NiMh battery removed....what long term performance is like, I haven't any experience as to date. Feedback from others is always welcomed. Thanks!
