The Asian Fishing cat is a bit larger than a Maine Coon, with smaller ears and a grey spotted coat. It lives in Southeast Asia. Its most unusual feature is its large, slightly webbed (!) paws, which it uses to scoop fish out of the water. It is not related to the Maine Coon at all, even though some Maine Coons (like my own) like water and scoop up small items (tidbits, paperclips) in their paws. I have never heard of a Maine Coon "fishing" in the water.

From what I understand, a "fishercat" in New England is the term for a weasel-like mammal larger than an average housecat that kills housecats. Many people (including myself) who live near the woods keep their cats indoors for this reason. I could not find the name in my dictionary, so perhaps it is a local colloquialism.

The fishercat belongs to the marten-like animals (like marten and weasel) and is their largest and heaviest living representative, known for being a ferocious predator. It is not only known in North America, but also in Northern Europe (Scandinavia, Russia), and in Western Siberia.

I didn't know they like cats- that's something they seem to have in common with ALF.

Fishercats are a martin-like animal native to New Hampshire. They eat cats and any other small animals that they can find. They make a noise that sounds like a baby crying. They are very tough - you can put 5 shots in one and it will still keep coming after you. They have them exhibited at capron Park Zoo in Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Thanks for answering this question. My sister-in-law lives in Vermont and says no one who loves cats will have one that goes outdoors because of the fishercats. I didn't know what one was and she had never seen one so couldn't tell me. She thought it was a type of weasel but didn't know for sure.
