There have been many, many underground command centers (bunkers) in the D.C. area for many years. Are there new ones? Did I miss something?

FM

No, no new ones that I know of. Just more of the usual from the hand-wringing, the sky is falling, Y2Krackpot brigade.

Vinnie; Are responsible people preparing for contingencies with more self-reliance all crackpots?

-- Watchful (seethesea@msn.com), March 10, 1999.

If the government is preparing (bunkers, "contingency planning", then does that make them crackpots? Does this mean that we have been governed by "crackpots" since the Cold War mess began?

-- Faze the Nation (dazed@confused.com), March 10, 1999.

It's okay for the government to have underground bunkers, but heaven forbid if the citizens want to store extra provisions. It just doesn't jibe for me.

There is a difference between prudent contingency planning and the nonsensical chicken little, New World Order, Government fearing nonsense that is so popular here, i.e. scotty saying THEY are digging new bunkers.

Scotty, Koskinen is on the record as NOT being a bump-in-the-roader now, go and listen to the press conference from this morning on the thread "Koskinen to speak at "y2k the press and preventing panic". He doesn't want the press to report y2k as being a bump in the road, but doesn't want chicken littles either and wants to avert a panic.

As always, he beats around the bush, but it is clear that he is concerned. He was vague on how much the press should advice on preparations, leaving it open to them and emphasising "good sense and responsibility" and that the goal was to prevent panic.

Vinnie,

If "contingency planning" is a prudent thing for our government to do, then it's prudent for me as well.

Got insurance?

Harry,

One assumes you are of the hand-wringing variety. See you back here the first week of january - one assumes you wil be humbler then...
