Compact Flash Card Readers & Mac G-3 SCSI

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Switching cameras and buying a Nikon #950 which uses Compact Flash cards. Seems like all the readers like the MicroTech are designed for use with PCM cards and one must use an adapter to use CF cards. I need a SCSI compatible CF Card reader with good download time specs, to use with my Mac G-3 (older grey box, NOT USB) Are there any models that just do Compact Flash Cards? The MicroTech is about $200.00 and then you have to buy the CF adapter I believe. Thanks to all that answer. Bobbylove1@Ao

SCSI readers are REALLY fast and REALLY expensive. :) i see one from kodak for $270, microtech for $200. Minolta discontinued one that used to sell for $70, isn't that depressing?

I too have an original G3 (mini-tower) with SCSI, and have been searching for a way to connect a CF card reader for my expected Coolpix 950. Lexar's tech told me they are coming out with a USB reader that will cost something about $70. ClubMac has a USB adapter for a PCI slot (that our G3s have), for $50. That's a total of $120 for the reader and USB adapter. Remember, the Lexar USB Reader is not yet available. To put this into perspective, I checked Microtech's SCSI CF Reader's price at C/NET comparison pricing site, and the cheapest was Egghead's offer of about $159. If that's the state of affairs, we might wait, if we can, for the Lexar USB Reader to become available. One caveat of this arrangement, is that the USB adapter can be used for another USB device as well as the reader.

In the meantime, I presume the 950 includes a cable to download files to the Mac, albeit awfully slowly. The only port I can imagine doing this, is the printer port.
