I'm trying to get a whole picture of y2k and found a link to the 2nd global y2k summit: http://www.y2k.gov.ph/html/speakers/registration.htm Maybe this is interesting for this forum.

Conference Topics

The Summit will tackle Y2K key issues that are common to internal government responsibilities and/or private industry and those that may cross international boundaries.

Contingency Planning

Given the limited time remaining for solving the Year 2000 problem, many agencies and companies may not be able to complete the renovation and testing of their mission-critical systems, and may face disruptions in their operations. Because of the uncertainty as to the risks posed by the Year 2000 problem, organizations must have contingency plans in place that anticipate likely scenarios and address them in a way that reduces the risk of Y2K related failures and ensure continuity of operations.

Emedded Systems

There are an estimated 25 billion microchips embedded in electronic devices found ni telephone exchange systems, manufacturing plants and factories, medical systems, autmated teller machines, and even on ordinary domestic appliances. Many of these chips are hard-wired with programs that include date-sensitive instructions.

Legal Issues

It is estimated that litigation arising from Year 2000 related failures will cost up to $3 trillion worldwide. Legal risks include potential breach of contracts, statutory exposure, class action litigation, and liability suits arising from failures to fix the Y2K problem in hardware, software, and embedded systems.

Auditing Year 2000 Projects

Collectively, the Year 2000 conversion is the largest I.T. project the world has ever seen, hence the role of information systems auditing has become more essential than ever. Even the most rigorous project management and quality assurance methods and techniques are not enough to keep the Year 2000 project on track. Auditing is integral not only in the process of addressing the problem, but also in implementing the conversion and testing solutions.

Readiness of National Governments

How to get participants up to speed with the issues related to the Year 2000 date change particularly those surrounding the inter-dependencies among the different infrastructure components. It will be the occassion for the participants of countries not yet actively involved to get familiar with the Global Y2K readiness. They will also have the opportunity to share experiences with representatives from other countries.

Dutch approach

The sheets of the dutch speaker at this summit, Peter Hagedoorn, can be found at : http://www.mp2000.nl/millen/Millen.nsf/adfca405ecc163f041256691002ea82f/e112aa7da0335002412567290051c2ec?OpenDocument in Manilla.pdf.

He is talking about the Dutch approach in relation with Europe and the world.
