ALL KINDS OF SMARTS BY HOWARD GARDNER IN THIS ARTICLE GARDNER REFERS TO PEOPLE HAVING AT LEAST EIGHT DIFFERENT INTELLIGENCES:LANGUAGE,LOGIC,MUSICAL,SPATIAL,BODILY/KINESTHETIC,INTERPERSONAL,AND NATURALIST.HE FEELS NO TWO PEOPLE ARE EXACTLY THE SAME IN ALL AREAS.PEOPLE LEARN IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS AND HAVE MANY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES. SO WE AS TEACHERS NEED TO BE ABLE TO ASSESS IN DIFFERENT WAYS. HE DOESN'T LIKE THE IDEA OF TESTS THAT MEASURE PEOPLES INTELLIGENCE. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS CAN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THINGS THAT MATTER.HE STATES THAT LOGIC AND LANGUAGE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT INTELLIGENCES.TO GIVE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES, HE SAID IF THREE PEOPLE WERE LOST EACH ONE WOULD GET HOME DIFFERENTLY. I AGREE WITH PEOPLE HAVING MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE THAT DO THE SAME THINGS BUT USE DIFFERENT METHODS. I BEIEVE THAT STUDENTS SHOULD LEARN FROM A VARIETY OF METHODS AND NOT TO BE TAUGHT BY THE METHOD "TEACHING TO A TEST"

Hello Tim: Try to not use all capital letters for your responses. We techno's consider it a form of "flaming". I can see at least in part what you are saying about the article but I would like you to develop the response a bit. Please E-mail me with your updated thoughts. Thank You, John Hansen

Prune, I personally like the "all-caps" approach. It makes it easier for us old people to see. Your article seems interesting and I agree that there are many different types of intelligence. I know people that are extremely smart and yet drive their car for 11,000 miles between oil changes. To the contrary the person that changes his oil every 2,000 miles as recomended may not be able to balance their checkbook. It's a good thing for variety or else we would be in a pretty boring world. As far as teaching to the test- WHY NOT, THAT IS WHAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT IS PROMOTING WITH THE PROFILES.
