Brownouts

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Senator Bennett stated on Sunday talking head show that brownouts were the most likely scenario that the US will face. I have heard that low line voltage can damage home appliances. What should I plan to unplug for the millenium? Should I install any type of protective device to counter brownout effects? What home appliances are susceptable to damage from brownouts--everything?

Thankyou

I plan on throwing the breakers to the off position before midnight 12/31/1999 leaving only a light and perhaps the tv circuit on. If the light and tv flickers/fades I will leave them off. I would hazard a guess that all appliances are susceptible to damage by brownouts.

Any item with a compressor (i.e.air conditioning system,frige/freezer) can be ruined by low voltage.
