Experation Dates on Canned Items

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My wife and I went to the supermarket recently and started stocking up on can goods. We were careful to only buy items with an experation date. However we noticed that most items did not have any experation dates. Does anyone have any idea how long canned goods last?

Curious;

Here is one link to a very good list of expiration dates for food. I am sure that you will get other links from the folks here.

Forget the University of Michigan, etc. etc. I put aside canned goods in days of Kennedy missle crisis. Forgot same till we moved. Restored in new home; forgot same. During divorce, will starving slowly, found same . Although 9 years old, covered with rust, I opened and ate every last one. Have recently done same with canned goods from shelter put there in '87 !!! Cans so rusted, that when I was trying to steel wool off the rust ( beets , spinich and large can Campbell beans ), they actually started leaking. Ate them all as a test and I'm writing this 2 months later !!! Labeling on steel can and spraying over with clear polyurethane is the best way to store in damp places for long periods of time. We'll be eating food bought today so fast , I reason, I don't bother any more . Just wrap can tightly in plastic shopping bags, place in box; wrap box in clear garbage bags and SEAL TIGHTLY !! Should go 10 years easy. Got a freezer ? Plan to fill mine with bacon on sale; put down eggs in water glass solution (keeps about 3 months). Wonder what those politicians/stockbrokers/DGIs buying the $750,000 homes in the primevil woods next door will pay for bacon/eggs breakfast next February ? Got gold ?? Eagle

Here is a better solution for eggs, it is called Ke-Peg. Current test show that it will keep eggs up to 3 years. you can get it from http://www.happyhovel.com/. It really works.

Thanks , John Walsh. Can't imagine how it works, but I'll try most anything once ( other than Russian roulette ). Eagle
