My computer won't read VCD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi friends,

I have tried to play VCD from my cd-rom (2x) with Media Player and XingMpeg Player. In either cases, I always get following message:

MMSYSTEM281 (or MMSYSTEM291)This file could not be played. Check the filename or install a driver that supports this type of file.

I even got into the Media Control Device (in Settings) to see whether there is any problem. But nothing was wrong. I have 3 VCDs and none of them works. Please email me ASAP if you have any clue to help me. Thanks.

If you have Windwos Media Player 5.2/6.0 then you need to uninstall it and get an update to xing mpegplayer. Use the new version 3.30 to eliminate any errors. I use to have this problem untill I got XING MpegPlayer 3.30 and now they run sweetly

To view Video CD from your computer, you must have CD-Rom speed of 16X or faster... I have seen Video CD played on 12X CD-Rom but the quality of movie not very good. If you have 2X CD-Rom, from my knowledge, there is no way of watching Video CD from your computer.

I have an 8x cd-rom and the movie plays perfectly. It is not the speed of the CD drive(most movies are made for single speed drives). It is your video card and CPU. P166wMMX and a MPEG hardware card will play the movie at near laser disc quality.
