Rick C., "Micro-gridding" the GRID?????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

Rick,

I recently reviewed a set of audio tapes of a financial seminar in New Orleans that featured a number of Y2K experts. One of them, Jim Lord, talked about risks to the economy and touched upon the vulnerability of the GRID. He stated he was leaving the conference to attend a meeting of electric utility companies and leading industry consultants (including yourself) to discuss the possibility of "micro-gridding" (my term) the GRID. Is it possible to break the main connections between the major grid components as well as isolating each major leg into 100's of separate "micro-grids"??? I am assuming that if possible, this would protect the larger system and isolate problem areas for easier repair. What would be the consequences of a proactive plan like this? What areas of the country would be most negatively affected by such a plan? When would the industry need to begin implementation of this plan to be ready for 1/1/2000? Did you attend a meeting to discuss such a plan, and if so, what was the outcome of the meeting?

Thank you so much for this forum and your website. It has been invaluable to me in my education of and preparation for Y2K.
