Aladdin alternative?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A local store is selling a lantern made by Coleman under the Peak 1 brand name.

The box says that it provides 125 candle power light (equivalent of a 75 watt soft white bulb).

It operates on unleaded gasoline or Coleman fuel.

Is anyone familiar with this? The Aladdins which are sold out provide 60 watt light, right?

Should I assume that this uses the mantle and other parts of a regular Coleman lantern?

I don't know anything about lanterns except what I have read on the net recently. It looks to me like this would be a satisfactory substitute when Aladdins are unavaliable.

Opinions, anyone?

O.K, at the risk of being "flamed" here, I'm thinking about setting up a dealership in the Midwest with the U.S. distributor of the German made Petromax lanterns. I selected one for myself, because they've been in use a long time (at least since WWII) put out 500 watts and will burn almost anything (apparently even vegetable oil). If you're interested in buying one, send me an email. I'm undecided about forming a distributorship, but if you think you want one, send me an email. That may give me an idea about whether I want to proceed with this. I'd have to get enough orders to justify the purchase of an initial inventory.

If you feel the need to flame me on this--please do so nicely? I'm not as thick-skinned as some of the rest of you. Thanks!

The Peak 1 Multifuel, is small, relatively easy to operate, and requires either gas or Coleman fuel. It uses specific sized mantles, for that lantern, and a specific generator, for that lantern. It is relatively fuel efficient but you will want several generators whne you roll off the Coleman fuel, as unleaded gas is nowhere near as clean when it evaporates as is Coleman fuel. Generators are where the fuel is vaporised for burning on the ASH that is what becomes of the mantle when you initially burn it in. Don't even think about cleaning them, it is NOT possible.

Ref Mid-west Petromax Dealership:::: You may have a hard time competing with Britelyt. their prices are better than Lehman's.

FWIW

If you need any spare Coleman parts and can't find them locally, order directly from Coleman. They are a bit more expensive (I paid $13 each for dual fuel stove generators) but they are delivering FAST! I ordered last Tuesday, and they arrived UPS on Friday.
