Called our power co op and....

Knowing that some small power companies are providing (for a fee) people to hook up generators to homes, I called our rural co op. Much to my amazement I was told "no, unless I was a big business. Then they would supply the generator and hook up for the business". So maybe the gas pump will run in my area?? Obviously they are taking this y2k serious. They do not produce power and buy power from another non net producer. They have implied to the public that if we go down, we will probably stay down quite awhile and then power, when available, would have to be rationed for essential businesses, hospitals, nursing homes ,etc And rightly so!

Got a flash light?

At a meeting last week in a neighboring county, an official from the power company told the people at the meeting to expect several weeks of severe power outages followed by five to six months of intermittent blackouts. If this is what they're admitting, what is the real truth?

cody,

You actually got someone from a power company to ADMIT that? Wow, what did you do, hold a gun to his head? Sounds like someone will be looking for a job before 1/1/00:-)...

Code, is your local power company one that generates power, or are they only a distributor?

We've all seen talk of net power exporting plants islanding or cutting off power exports if required. This doesn't put the brokers in a good position.

this is a company that generates a lot of power in my state. I would imagine the guy who said this is now pushing a broom deep in the generator plant.

Taz...this one comment struck me as indicative of just how reasonable us so-called alarmist really are. And I think most people, if they'd just tell the truth, are capable of dealing with self-sacrifice to keep the common good on track. Rationing of power, etc. Blind-siding people is just totally counter-productive. But of course, they are all still trying to make as many bucks as possible prior to the main event, and truth will take a heavy toll on profits.
