Y2K Meets Martha Stewart

By Declan McCullagh

Admit it. You know that you can't survive Y2K in style unless your basement bunker boasts at least three cases of $98-a-bottle Dom Ruinart champagne. Gold bars are key. So are generous supplies of chocolate, candles, and cigars. Heck, just because the rest of the world is in chaos doesn't mean you should go without.

You guessed it. Martha Stewart has met Y2K, in the form of a cover story in the January-February issue of Wallpaper, the highbrow British fashion mag.

A six-page spread complete with svelte models posing with their subterranean stash offers Wallpaper's upscale readers the skinny on all things fashionable about Y2K. (Don't forget weights to firm those abs! A crossbow as an elegant means of self-defense!)

"Twelve months from now, things might be feeling a little more 19th-century than 21st as computers crash, martial law is imposed in the UK, the world's airlines are grounded and the global economy is reduced to a feudal barter system. Hysterical doomsday scenario? Of course. But we're still building our Y2K bunker, just in case," the Wallpaper editors say.
