Please, don't feed the trolls!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Old kooks and new posters, hear ye, hear ye!

Please don't feed the trolls. For the newbies, a troll is someone who posts purposefully inflammatory threads, usually with lots of capital letters, bad spelling and grammar.

Cogent behavior modification techniques for extincting unwanted behavior include ignoring the troll behavior in question, the thread. Therefore I suggest you do not engage the trollish. This means also avoiding name -calling. You waste your time. If the poster does not get attention eventually they will get bored and go away.

You can be wise about this. Breathe and rise above.

Back at the top, this bears repeating.

Encore une fois

The problem is that old posters might want to castigate trolls. This leads to wasted bandwidth.

Meanwhile, I suggest that all of those who GI continue to stock up and prepare for the hard times ahead!

Never wrestle with a pig. You'll get dirty and the pig will love it.

This is so true! TmaN...

Bravo, Donna! It seems that everywhere you turn lately on all of the y2k forums (not just this one), you find a bunch of evil little people lurking and posting garbage that is positively unverifiable. I don't mind the ones that can't spell or type, just the ones that can't think. Going to Walmart. Lobo

Well said. My thoughts all along. Nice to see that there are those who were fearful that are now "getting it"

Time or not, I'm revivifying this thread...

For all newbies...a troll is someone who posts nonsense or blatently inflammatory threads, or (audaciously) impersonates a regular participant of this forum. Also know that if you post in all capital letters and mispell words, many of us will suspect that you are a troll.

If you have honest questions and thoughts, please post...but otherwise...

DON'T feed the trolls....!

-- Donna Barthuley (moment@pacbell.net), March 08, 1999.

Don't feed the trolls means that unless you are a serious troll-buster, you don't respond to obviously inflammatory, or ludicrous posts...(I am not talented in troll busting...)Don't feed the trolls means you don't respond at all to the nonsense...most times you can tell from the title of the thread that it's meant to inflame rather than inform...

Just my two cents, dancin' in my clown shoes.
