Are You Invited, Dianne and Leska?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Todays, GN has a series of FEMA articles, including this one FEMA to Hold Closed Conferences that lists a series of "by invitation only" conferences.

Anyone invited to these?

Anyone who can become a fly on the wall (without getting hit with a swatter)?

Dianne, Leska and Ashton?

De, thanks for posting. I'll go look at your link. Ashton & I are pretty burnt out on meetings; we're naturally hermits. We pretty much know what's going to happen, just not how long it will last or how bad it will get. We haven't received any invitations, but then again, it's only been in the last 2 weeks that local Fire Depts & EOCs received even preliminary intros to Y2K. The trickle down is happening MUCH slower than the grassroots branching up.

Nope, De, we won't be going to any of those. Rumor has it we may be participating in the summer exercises as "cannon fodder." We'll see. Personally, we think Y2K will come more quickly than *anybody* will be organized or ready for. It is really up to each of us as individuals. I no longer care much what the normal channels are doing, except that I have a dread that they will blow it in more ways than one. Be prepared to hibernate and "camp at home," to use Diane's apt comparison. Think bugging out to the countryside and totally getting off the grid is the smart thing to do, Y2K or no; too many uncertainties clawing at the world. If things stay OK one still has the conveniences plus country peace & natural beauty. Saner all the way around.

Sorry,

Not invited. Trying to talk to someone on the local City Council though. They're not "in" of course.

Never say never.

Buck up Leska! I know you're tired. Oregon looks a whole lot better than California with today's news.

Too bad.

Leska, you do sound as if you've been reading too much of the news Dianne has posted today. Please get back to your normal self very soon.

Leska -

This morning, I listened to the third of a three-part "Focus on the Family" program on Hospice Care. Gained a deeper appreciation for the work you do. Thanks for this, and also for your contributions to this board.

Hey, George Clooney's character on ER is taking a job in Portland. Maybe he actually compared Chicago's Y2K status with Puddle City's and thought rooting for the Trailblazers looked pretty darn good! 8-}]

Blessings...

Hi De,

Our y2k group here in Jersey met with the Emergency Manager in our county and he was not invited to the FEMA meeting. So, he invited himself to the FEMA meeting in Newark next week.

Our meeting with him was frustrating. He plans to do nothing to prepare. His reasoning is that the county is not set up to deal with the mass of people that would be affected by a power outage of any duration. When we pushed him, he said all that could be done was to raise the level of awareness and encourage individual contingency plans. He had no grasp of y2k or real concern of the potentialities.

At least he invited himself and maybe he will 'get it'. When he gets back we plan to find out what's going on.
