How to Get Better OCR for line art

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have an Acer Prisa 620P scanner coupled with Xerox's Text Bridge Classic which I use for scanning newspaper and magazine articles. Text Bridge does a good-excellent job of recognizing text in maganize articles, but does a miserable job of reproducing text from newspaper clippings. Any advice for improving the accuracy of OCR from the latter source? E.G, settings, "tricks of the trade," etc. Or do I upgrade my OCR software? And if I do, any recommendations? Thanks much Richard S.

Caere's OmniPage Pro seems to consistently win the ratings race for best OCR. Don't know how much it would help you. What res are you scanning at? More pixels can help OCR accuracy, but at the cost of much slower processing times. Don't know of any relevant "tricks" for dramatic improvements...
