Y2k on KOIN 6 Portland

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

2/18/99 Lisa Balik from KOIN 6 (Portland) did an interview with a firefighter and contractor. Both were preparing for Y2k. The contractor said he would be leaving Portland before Dec.31 for fear of riots. The fireman and his family were shown with their storage of foods, canning supplies, etc. Out of fifty families that were contacted to do these interviews only two would talk on camera. All others said they feared that once something happened, people would come to their homes wanting help.

What caught my attention was the seriousness of the interview and the fact at the end of the piece, Lisa said they (the television station, I presume) are telling everyone to have food, gas and cash stocked up. KOIN news will be having Y2k pieces for the rest of the week. Want to know more, we were told to go to www.Koin.com Y2kare

Linda A, what time are these newscasts? The KOIN web site is the best of the Portland news channels. They have been focusing on Y2K for a long time. Those firemen teach the NET/CERT courses. Take them, they're terrific! Geared to survive the 8-9 subduction zone earthquake coming soon, and help neighborhoods. Do go to the web site; you'll be pleasantly surprised :) :) :)

Leeska, it was opn the 6 or 7 oclock news. I do not know the times in Oregon. I live in Ky. I have Primestar and get stations from far off but no local stations (go figure) It was early evening.

I did see where you had posted on their site. They seem to have a good Y2k web site. Agin, it is going tobe on every eveningthis week.

I taped the segment and just finsihed watching. I am surprised that keeping cash was mentioned. Lisa said have a couple of weeks worth of cash on hand.

Thanks for the heads-up, Linda A! One of our pts had Primestar, pretty neat; also one had a large satellite dish on a rural farm. All these electricity-dependent play-learn technologies that are tempting to want to buy -- which will work in 2000?

Will try to see if we can catch these KOIN broadcasts. Spokane area more advanced on Y2K than Portland area, but KOIN is trying to be #1, and they are the rising star.

KOIN is summarizing their newscasts, and their web site is highlighting Y2K more & more every day. Good old Oregon, usually the first and most rad for individualistic/ community-good upstarts ;-)

Worth checking out. Anybody's local TV station web site doing as well or better? Please post the URL here. Want to compare :)

KPTV also did a series on the 10 c'clock news this week- pretty responsible. KGW 10 o'clock a few weeks ago- I helped with both of those.

Today y2k front page city of Portland is organizing neighborhoods using exsisting community groups and even lil old Oregon City purchased 1000 copies of the Utne reader.

The classes I'm giving at Bobs Red Mill are seriously maxed out (100 people each). They had only planned to give 1 now the second is full with sign ups for a 3rd.

Glad to see people moving early BUT how to meet the demand for education. Huge production/distribution(cost and time) problem especially for those without the net.

We have handouts, videos etc done at our church (3 part series Home, Financial, Medical) plus the food info from Bob's Red Mill but how to get to libraries, churches etc.

Please advise what is working for you. Please e-mail direct with what is working for you. As specific as possible please.

EC, who are you? Have you posted on this Forum before? Sorry if we missed you. Kinda boggled, and your sig isn't eye-catching enough to personalize & remember :)

How did you find out about this Forum? Have you met us yet? What front page are you referring to? We may be able to help you, and you may be able to help the Fire Depts who have the exact same concerns which you just posted. Write more, please :) Ashton & Leska in Cascadia, whose memory is starting to lose space ;-)
