Y2K Standard Of Care Checklist

The standard of care in Year 2000 compliance efforts likely will be defined by federal government documents that detail how to remediate the problem in a timely and effective manner. The basic protocol has five steps:

1. Create an inventory of all computer hardware and software, and equipment.

2. Evaluate which items are "mission-critical"; in other words, triage the computer-related items to the survival of the business.

3. Test the computers and equipment.

4. Repair or replace what fails because of Year 2000 problems.

5. Plan contingencies for the failure of on-site noncritical functions and critical functions that were not tested or fixed in time; plan contingencies to account for vendors/business partners that are noncompliant and cannot deliver necessary supplies in response to need.
