Buy a separate film scanner or attachment for my Epson expression 636

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I bought an Epson Expression 636 about 2 years ago, but without the attachment for scanning film and negatives. I want a good film scanner under $1000. and don't think the attachment for the Epson would be as good as a separate Film scanner....What would you recomment? Should I buy the attachment for the Epson (will be using for 35mm slides (2x2's) and negatives mostly) or which film scanner in this price range is rated the best?

You're right, the adapter for your flatbed *definitely* won't do as good a job as even an inexpensive scanner. We have reviews posted for the Oly ES-10, and HP PhotoSmart Scanner, both of which are quite cheap. At "under $1,000", we have info on both the Nikon CoolScan III and Minolta Dimage Scan Speed, both excellent scanners. We're expecting a review unit of the less-expensive Minolta Dimage Scan Dual, which should be midway in cost between the low-end units and the Dimage Scan Speed/CoolScan III. Check out the scanner reviews on the site (click the word "Scanners" in the left-hand Nav bar), and see what you think! Good luck!
