GEYSERVILLE IS GETTING READY FOR Y2K

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Sonoma County : One Thread

At the request of Geyserville Unified School District Superintendent Bill Redman, members of the district Technology Committee held a meeting about Y2K issues affecting the Geyserville community (Redman plans to chair the committee, but was unable to attend the first meeting, on Feb. 10). Ironically, Redman and most of the district staff on the committee are not Geyserville residents -- but they would be responsible for the safety of Geyserville children if, for instance, utilities failed during the school day. The dozen or so school staff, students, and town residents at the meeting agreed to make a survey of needs and resources, and report to the Geyserville Planning Committee at its annual meeting on April 5. Also at that meeting, the group will hand out information packets about family Y2K preparedness. The group brainstormed on the potential needs of a rural community such as Geyserville, with a geographically widespread population, and came up with a long list of items to be researched. They agreed that subcommittees should be assigned to various areas such as food, water, safety, communications, medical, and more, and that each subcommittee should assess the needs and resources in its area; however, subcomittees were not formed. The group agreed that its first order of business would be to invite key community resource personnel (e.g., the water company owner, the fire chief) to the next committee meeting, as these people are most familiar with the needs and resources that affect virtually the entire community. The committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. every second and fourth Wednesday at the high school (next meeting: Feb. 24). Anyone even remotely interested is urgently requested to attend, as we are very late getting started with our community preparedness and need every scrap of help we can get.
