Discussion of UTNE Reader #3 "Hot Potato Wisdom" by Alice Hoffman This was a witty compelation of insights from the author's grandmother. It was an article which was light-hearted in nature, yet did stop to make you think. For those of you who have known or do know an elderly person who has a "sharp wit" about them, this article will make you laugh. I am fortunate enough to still have two sets of grandparents alive and many of these insights hit home as if it were one of them being "philosophical". For me, it shows that you must respect and give creedance to the opinions of your elders. They may seem out-of- whack at times, but their opinions do hold truth. For one, they have been through much more than we will ever have to go through. Secondly, we will some day be there ourselves. I hope that when that day comes I will have someone who takes the time to listen to me. The paragraph which talks about men and women and choosing a partner is hilarious. If you have not read this turn to page 37 and begin reading where it starts BETWEEN men and women... Has anyone ever tried anything like that? Perhaps someone could do a research project on this topic! Laughter is very underestimated in my opinion. More people should have this type of attitude toward life in general. I did find the ending to be bit of a surprise and unexpected but I'll leave that for you to read if you so choose.

Hello Brian: My name is John Hansen. I'm the new discussion facilitator. Currently I'm an instructor in the Communication Department at UMD. Your comments are totally awesome! Some of the items you are talking of have been examined in psychology and psychiatry studies but much remains to be examined. Do you use humor in the classroom? Is it valuable for you? Any thoughts? Thanks, John
