This URL to the September survey results for oil and gas is compliments of James Chancellor of the Timebomb 2000 forum:

Here is a quote from James which was with the URL:

"Can you say fuel shortages in a major way?"

I'd say those who are concerned about utility fuel supplies have good reason for that concern. Thanks, James, for the link!

As another note, they are planning to release the next survey results this month. It will be interesting to compare them with Septmember. Thanks Bonnie for all your time spent in research for the rest of us. You've really made a difference.

Regards and God bless.

A fuel shortage/rationing period could risk a contingency plan which involves the use of fuel-powered personal generators. I believe that at this time, fuel shortage is a higher risk area than power shortage. How much sense does it make to rely on a generator as a backup for our power at home?

Troy,

Re: the generator, it all depends on your own personal risk tolerance. With respect to fuel availability, storing a lot of fuel presents some problems.

First, local zoning/building codes may not allow you to store more than a minimal amount of fuel at your residence for personal use. There's ways around this, to be sure. For instance, if you heat with fuel oil, you've probably got a pretty good sized storage tank in your home, and a diesel gen set *can* run on No. 2 fuel oil. Still, you'd go through that stash of fuel oil pretty quick if you ran your gen set and the heater continuously.

Second, storing any kind of fuel in bulk quantities, unless you have proper storage facilities, is one heck of a safety hazard.

So, yes, fuel supply could obviously be problematic for "home backup" generators. But, consider that in an emergency power situation, you should be judicious in your use of your generator. Don't operate it 24X7 or you'll burn out the genny quickly and/or use up all the fuel.

These details (and the ever popular *more*) are disussed in depth in the video available from the euy2k.com website. The bottom line - you have to think about all of this in advance, and know how to manage power use in your home before an outage happens.
