Y2K Junk Mail

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Today a neighbor that I spoke to last summer about Y2K stopped by, of all things to say "thank you" to me for telling her husband about it. I was surprised because I only talked once with her husband, and never to her about it, and just assumed they were Forget Its. They aren't. They are preparing. Quietly.

Anyway, what prompted her to come by was Y2K junk mail - you know, bulk rate stuff that we all either glance at or just throw away. She said that it reminded her to "finally stop by" and say thanks. I got the same mailing - I guess that everyone in the neighborhood did. So I was wondering if you have received any Y2K junk mail too. Maybe we should add this to our awareness barometers, huh?

What is y2k junkmail?

I'm serious.

Is it public awareness stuff?

No, it is most definitely not awareness packets, it is catalogs selling survival gear, storable food, guns+ammo, etc. with a bent towards y2k sales.

Any mail that comes unasked for to you is what I think of as junk mail. So, junk mail that specifically mentions Y2K is what I am referring to here.

I just got one looking for programmers in NY/NJ area. I'm in Wisconsin. Go figure.

No Y2K junk mail here in Northern VA.

Gee thanks Rob, now my IQ went from 60 to 61. I think I KNOW what junk mail IS. I just thought the y2k stuff might be like the deluge of political junk you get at election time. Maybe actually some type of AWARENESS literature. I suppose THAT would be a miracle.

Deborah: I in no way meant to question your IQ, sorry if it came off that way. I have learned that people sometimes have different definitions of things and just wanted to be specific about I was referring to. So if I have offended you, please accept this as an apology. As far as the Y2K junk mail, it can be related to awareness if it is a solicitation for a Y2K newsletter, or book, or anything else that could raise awareness.

Back to CSPAN2 and the Senate hearing. Offline, Rob.

Rob,

Apology accepted. Thank you. I guess I'm getting kind of defensive.

Rob, yes, I am getting Y2K junk mail. Lots of catalogs, etc. My guess when I saw it, is that someone sold a list of customer names. Have you ordered anything from Walton Feed, Lehman's, etc.?

Hi Gayla: Yeah, I thought of that too - that maybe my name was on a list or something - could be, and maybe this applies to my neighbor as well since they are preparing. I subscribe to various financial mags and so it is possible that since Y2K affects investors etc., that it could have come from there.

It doesn't seem from the forum's response that there is any new big Y2K mailing campaign going on though, which is what I was interested in finding out.
