Looking for info on quarry operations around Stone Mtn, GA involving railroads

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shortline, Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railroading : One Thread

Hi everyone. I have heard that the old quarry operations at what is now Stone Mountain Park used some sort of industrial railway to transport the rock (to a connection with the GA RR, I would assume). ANY info, photos, etc. that anyone would have would be of great interest to me. Thanks!

There was, indeed, a quarry operation at Stone Mountain some years prior to the opening of the state park there. The Stone Mountain Granite Company (I think that was the name) operated a quarry which included a rail operation. The interchange was very near the Georgia Railroad's Stone Mountain depot and I recall seeing a photo of a light locomotive (a 2-6-2 unless I'm mistaken) sitting on the track right at the depot. Portions of the Stone Mountain Scenic RR tracks are laid on the right of way of this quarry line.

I hope this helps.
