OH GREAT - get ready to have this one beat to death in the media

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

When we are striving to have accurate reporting, stories like this will be beaten to death by the media:

I don't have a URL yet, but our local NBC affiliate news at 4:30 (Channel 17) just reported on a story about a couple in FL.

They withdrew $20,000 in cash and buried it behind their house under the dog house. They made the statement that "They were worried about losing their money in the bank due to y2k and planned to use their money for a generator and other y2k related expenditures".

You guessed it. The money is now stolen.

Just be prepared to fend off the DGI'ers that will use this in their anti-preparedness propaganda.

I would observe that the couple might have unwittingly told some people of their plans. Do discuss preparedness in a general reference, without revealing your specific preparations to others.

I Know, I'm stooping to the level of a troll, but, but I couldn't help it!

Where was the dog!

I would have him for lunch.

Lol, Eli, we all need moments of humor....... If we didn't, we'd go insane. My guess is the dog is in Tahiti stirring a MaiTai with a bone...

Too bad that DGI's will use the example to seriously belittle any y2k preparation efforts, though.

Maybe that dog has got some sense and is buying supplies for HIS house on the sly.

My local NBC News just ran the story also - (5:00 EST)! It's a shame that this Y2k story is what the media regards as newsworthy when there are so many other important Y2k stories that could be covered. I do feel badly for the couple. That's a big hunka dough!

Maybe the dog ate it! LOL

ThinkICan......I've seen dogs eat worse things than money.....

If anyone sees this story on the national news, let us all know. It would be a good time to let the local affiliates know how displeased we are with trivial "reporting" and would like to see more "news we can use". Isn't that what they say in their little promos?

Yep, I feel bad for them too. Lots of things besides y2k to deal with in our society...

Gang --

This story reeks of urban legend.

If you took that much money out of the bank to buy a generator & supplies, would you bury it? Wouldn't you just go shopping?

Hey, how about that classified ad for a Jaguar (Rolls/Camaro) for $8? Or the one about the hippie with the mouse burrowing into his brain? Or the girl with an ant nest in her nose? Or the tarantula that came in on imported clothing? Or the lady at the drive-in who got a fried finger in with her chicken wings???

Personally, I knew that hippie guy....

Anita E. -

No, no, no. Now, don't exaggerate about your relationships - we've told you ten thousand times already not to exagerate.....

You knew a guy whose brother knew the hippie.

My dog likes to eat her shit. I only had to feed her once.

-- hubba (gaga@blowmymind.com), February 02, 1999.

I knew it would not be long in coming.

.... word from the media .... don't hide your money under the doghouse .... Don't prepare for Y2K .....

Come on now First they should have got a Chow Chow Dog (best watch dog ever) Second If I got that kind of money I would have done my shopping real early. Also I know where the rat was before he was in the hippie's head.

"First they should have got a Chow Chow Dog (best watch dog ever)"

I have a 145lb .Great Pyrenees that has Chows for lunch,

All kidding aside we did get the Pyr. as a guard dog for Y2K. Thay can also be taught to pull a cart so he will at least earn his keep.

If you are thinking about a good guard dog you can't go wrong with a Pyrenees. They eat less than any other large breed.

But I must say that if you want a dog that comes when you call they arn't a very good choice because they are breed to work independenty of the sheppard. They also sleep most of the day and are up most of the night.

Your Pyrenees is no match for one bullet out of my gun. Sorry!

Let me tell you about my Chow :) Easy to house break won't let anyone in the house until I tell her to including son-in-laws :) My son has trouble breathing sometime in the night she comes and wakes me if he coughs a lot or if he has bad drams and talks in his sleep. Is she good with kids NO is she a friendly dog NO does she do tricks NO Does she mind me SOMETIMES do I trust her Completely. Never ever take a Chow that is more than 4 to 5 months old they bond very early and you will never get them to break that bond. Not a good dog for someone that doesn't have time to spend with them. I know of one that jumped thur a window trying to get someone that was on the porch one night. I still have my guns but she is my early warning system!
