canon 600 "I need more detail in prints"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am using a canon powershot 600 for a small photography business which takes photos of homes and I print out color flyers using a qms magicolor 2 laser printer at 2400 dpi. The pics are generally 6.5 inches x 3.5 inches but the detail is not always good enough . How can I enhance these pics "1.5 meg files" in photoshop 5.0 to get a better sharper more detailed print without over contrasting (which causes trees to look partly invisible against a sky) and without blurring the detail? any suggestions welcome

The ultimate answer will probably be a new camera, but in the meantime, you might try playing with the "unsharp masking" filter under "sharpen" on the Filters menu. The trick here is to find the right "radius" for the filter, then you can push the "amount" pretty high without losing details. Play with it a bit to get a feel for it: Experiment with REALLY LARGE radius and amount numbers, to get a sense of what each control does, then back down to reasonable values. You'll find that you want *slightly* more on the screen than looks good, in order to have the print look its best. Go
