Yourdon Forum Contingency Plan

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Last week I posted a request for suggestions on where to meet if this forum goes down. The only suggestion was from Mitchell Barnes who suggested Usenet. Unless someone comes up with another idea, I'll periodically post subject lines indicating that the forum may reconvene at Usenet in the event of technical difficulties.

Well, after posting this message I went to Usenet (through a Dejanews site) and I can't get any postings for 2-1-99. What's going on there?

Puddintame,

Good idea. That's where I'll look.

I would suggest that some "how to do it" information for those unfamiliar with USENET should go along with those regular notices.

Reading this posts I realize is a good idea; for I have asked myself what's gonna happen is the site"goes down". I'm VERY new in coputer stuff, and this forum has been a source of great info. for me. But if you go to the USENET, how do I find you there? Anewsgroup? An e-address? Please tell me. And thanks!

Go to www.dejanews.com and either do a search for Y2K (to access anyone at all who's talking about it) and/or search for comp.software.year-2000 (to access that one particular group).

You'll have to sift thru a lot of crap but hey, that's life. There are indeed diamonds among the dreck, just keep looking for them.

It's posted in a thread above, but the URL I have used to get to the Dejanews site of usenet postings is http://www.dejanews.com/dnquery.xp?search=word&svcclass=dncurrent&show sort=date&ST=QS&query=~g%20comp.software.year-2000

Hardliner, I don't know enough about Usenet to instruct anyone in how to use it. Pulling up the messages is simple enough using the Dejanews site. For any more refined instructions, I'd appreciate advice (from anyone) which I can incorporate into the periodic reminder posts.

http://www.dejanews.com/home_ps.shtml - can be used for intext string searches, or if that is left blank, the remaining fields define, for example - comp.software.year-2000, the date parameters. The subject line can be left blank. I would suggest using the 100 returns option rather than the default 25. There are also at least 3 other "2000" type groups, and of course, misc.survivalism. DejaNews makes it quite easy to establish a newsgroup.

You might consider starting a forum at www.delphi.com. They're free, easy to set-up, fairly reliable and pretty easy to navigate.

-- RUOK (RUOK@aol.com), February 01, 1999.

If this forum goes down for more than a few days or a week, it means that Greenspun and/or Yourdon has bailed out of "Dodge" and it's time for us to make our final move(s).
