What is rural Columbia like now?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Alot of people say its smart to be out of the city if TSHTF. (I tend to agree) The news reports from the Columbia earthquake demonstrate why. But are things any better in the rural areas? If Y2K is a 6+ is it silly to think you can escape chaos by preparing?

Does anyone know of any sources of news from rural columbia?

Just thinking aloud - Berry.

In our case we have 11 acres outside of a town of 8K in a county of 16K and some ways from a city. The idea as I see it is to look poor which comes naturally for me. An older mobile home on a backwoods road where there are no newer, nicer homes is our setting. The only attraction our place has is natural beauty with a lush pond visable from the road. Almost all of our neighbors raise farm animals and gardens.

On the other side of town where the land is not so productive but there is a lake large enough for water sports there are quite a number of newer homes in the 150K to 500K range. They spell money and things. If things get real bad having cast our lot with the poorer rednecks is IMHO a wise move.

The news from Columbia is making me feel sick.
Remember that many people want to be "positive" at all/any cost and therefore may refuse to look at history and reality. I don't like reality but to not acknowledge its existence is foolish.

Do not let a desire to be relentlessly positive blind one to the need to prepare.

Many people on the globe are not as 'enlightened' as the positive-stumpers and therefore may display documented common humanimal behaviors.

History is full of the more 'advanced' being trampled by the hungry masses.

A truly intelligent person in these times will do independent research on Y2K and prepare themselves for all possible contingencies, remaining consistently cheerful and helpful, and letting absolutely nothing dissuade them from vigorous preparation. Such a person will not become a PollyAnna trying to dampen the DoomGloomers, nor will he/she attempt to force their positive rah-rah niceness on those suffering thru stages of fear, depression, skepticism, or anger. All types of reactions and expressions (excluding the obscene disruptive trolls) seem to be necessary for ppl to try to come to grips with the possible termination of their way of life.

Just some thoughts after watching strong reactions from some newly semi-GIs.

Ashton & Leska in Cascadia, who are not yet as advanced as necessary to comprehend/act on all ramifications of Y2K, but are definitely out of the comfort zone on the learning/preparing curve :P

"out of the comfort zone... A truly descriptive phrase. Balanced precisely between Pollyanna and Doombrooder.

This could be Bumper Sticker of the Year.
