"Y2K - More Costly Than The Vietnam War"

Say Gartner Psychic Friends Group

{other estimates are *way* higher, aprroaching a trillion says all-ears Ross Perot... - Andy}

According to the Gartner Psychic Friends Group and Congressional Research Service, the battle to fight the Millennium Bug will exceed the entire cost of the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War (ahem, excuse us, the Vietnam 'conflict') consumed $500 billion in funding. The Millennium Bug is fast approaching $600 billion, and because cost estimates continue to rise unexpectedly, nobody knows how high they're going to get. This makes the Millennium Bug a natural disaster-class event. Even if nothing happens in 2000, the bug has already done severe economic damage. $600 billion spent with zero return. That's $600 billion that could have gone to education, infrastructure development, small business loans, research into new technology, or helping disadvantages families. But thanks to the shortsighted technology managers of the 1960's, 70's, and 80's, we're now spending $600+ billion cleaning up a mess that never should have occurred.

How can you say zero return? The consultants have bought bigger houses in new developments, the geeks have bought lots of stuff they wouldn't have bought otherwise. We have bought foods, and supplies. Consider the spin-offs (housing alone generates several bounces for each dollar, etc).

Peter (Big Boy) de Jager isn't complaining...

Before you all start, I stand by my previous post about "wheat and chaff" regarding Mr. de Jager - HE HAS SOLD OUT BIG TIME...

Two digits. One mechanism. The smallest mistake.

From dec 15th '98 (oops 1998 :) )

Mike - all great points you made.

It's particularly pathetic that only 120 delegates turned up at the conference, what happened to all the other countries (60-80???). And don't say they are not computerised, they don't need to attend, I don't buy that at all.

The US is the most ahead of the game worldwide - that's the good news AND the bad news. The US is 700,000 programmers short at this point in time and what do we read every day??? Budgets skyrocketing, assessments finding more areas needing remediation, the problem becoming magnitudinally *more* complicated not less.

You all know the facts.

De Jager IMHO has either lost it completely, has been "gotten to", or is letting his greed take over his conscience as Michael postulated above.

I was talking about VISA and the Banking system yesterday. Now De Jager knows full well that compliance in Banking must be 100%, 99% will not cut it.

Bryan posted this on the Banking issue a little while ago - something De Jager seems conveniently to have forgotten about.......

"Wrong calculations beget wrong calculations ad nauseum. Within 24 hours of the turnover, the Global Finacial System will either A) be completely corrupt B) be completely shut down so as to avoid A. The result is the same in either case; even if we don't go Milne, you are going to see a mess bigger than you can imagine. Alan Greenspan was entirely correct when he stated that 99% is not good enough. We will be nowhere close--not even in the ballpark. The engines have shutdown; the plane is falling--we simply haven't hit the ground yet. Scoff if you must; as a professional working with professionals, I know the score. It's going down. This is why at least 61% of IT professionals are pulling their money out before it hits--of course, in 10 or 11 months, that number will rise to 100%; but then, it will be to late. We know for a fact that that 50% of all businesses in this, the best prepared of countries, will not perform real-time testing. As a Programmer/Test Engineer, I can therefore assure you that at least 50% of all businesses in this, the best prepared of countries, are going to experience mission-critical failures, Gartners new optimistic spin not withstanding. Remediation sans testing is not remediation. The code will still be broken, just in new and unknown ways.

Got wheat?" Well, at $1,000,000 a year salary, I'm sure De Jager has plenty of wheat, much of it stockpiled around his stomach it seems! The next time you see the "Incredible Bulk" pontificating on that ever so scrumptious lecture circuit, take a look at that stomach and remember, where there is wheat there is *chaff*... and Peter is spewing out a lot of y2k chaff at this point in time.......

Got *CHAFF* Peter???

Andy I like the quote of:

Two digits. One mechanism. The smallest mistake.

"The conveniences and comforts of humanity in general will be linked up by one mechanism, which will produce comforts and conveniences beyond human imagination. But the smallest mistake will bring the whole mechanism to a certain collapse. In this way the end of the world will be brought about."

However have you ever seen the prophetic poem from Mother Shipton? She is a woman that died in 1450. She wrote a poem that I would be glad to post if you would like, when I get some time. Her poem has been verified to be 100% accurate, by historians! She says that anyone living through this century will do it with fear and trembling and shortly after 2000 she says that this world will die and a new one will be born. Take care Andy. Tman

It ain't the idiot technology managers that caused the problem, but rather their idiot bosses.

-- dave (wootendave@hotmail.com), January 29, 1999.

Tman, let's have it! The poem.

Lisa, Tman - this is what I've been sending to people enquiring about my signature line. quite eerie....... Hi xxxxxxx - like you, I am very interested in prophecy - especially those concerning us now with y2k, earth changes, in the late 20th century.

this is my signature

Some Catolic information:-

An old Irish monk named Malachy predicted the succession of Popes that was discovered centuries ago in Vatican archives. We are now on the third from the last in his account.

Anna Katharine Emerich who died in 1825 told of extensive visions she had that would culminate in a great upheaval in society in the late 20th century.

Fatima in 1917 predicted the second and possibly third world wars. None however mention y2k. But all point to this time as one for being prudent and stockpiling supplies.

also thought you might be interested in the following - Nostradamus and y2k

NOSTRADAMVS and Y2K

and finally this one - Mother Shipton

MOTHER SHIPTON

"The fiery year as soon as O'er, Peace shall then be as before; Plenty everywhere be found, And men with swords shall plough the ground. The time shall come when seas of blood Shall mingle with a greater flood. Carriages without horses shall go. And accidents fill the world with woe.

Around the world thoughts shall fly In the twinkling of an eye.

Waters shall yet more wonders do, How strange yet shall be true. The world upside down shall be, And gold found at the root of a tree.

Through hills men shall ride And no horse or ass be by their side; Under water men shall walk, Shall ride, shall sleep, shall talk; In the air men shall be seen, In white, in black, and in green.

Iron in the water shall float As easy as a wooden boat; Gold shall be found, and found In a land that's not now known. Fire and water shall more wonders do England shall at last admit a Jew; The Jew that was held in scorn Shall of a Christian be born and born.

A house of glass shall come to pass In England, but alas! War will follow with the work In the land of the Pagan and Turk And state and state in fierce strife Will seek each other's life But when the North shall divide the South An eagle shall build in the lion's mouth.

An Ape shall appear in a Leap year That shall put all womankind in fear And Adam's make shall be disputed And Roman faith shall like rooted, And England will turn around.

Thunder shall shake the earth; Lightning shall rend asunder; Water shall fill the earth; Fire shall do its work.

Three times shall lovely France Be led to dance a bloody dance; Before her people shall be free. Three tyrant rulers shall she see; Three times the People rule alone; Three times the People's hope is gone; Three rulers in succession see, Each spring from different dynasty. Then shall the worser fight be done, England and France shall be as one.

Waters shall flow where corn shall grow Corn shall grow where waters doth flow Houses shall appear in the vales below And covered by hail and snow; White shall be black then turn grey And a fair Lady be married thrice.

All England's sons that plough the land Shall be seen, book in hand; Learning shall so ebb and flow, The poor shall most wisdom know."

Another of Mother Shipton's prophecies has its own strange beauty of imagery. It is perhaps the most enigmatic of all.

"The lily shall remain in a merry world; and he shall be moved against the seed of the lion, and shall stand on one side of the country with a number of ships. Then shall the Son of Man, having a fierce beast in his arms, whose Kingdom is the land of the moon, which is dreaded throughout the world. With a number shall he pass many waters, and shall come to the land of the lion, looking for help from the beast of his country, and an eagle shall come out of the east, spread with the beams of the Son of Man, and shall destroy castles of the Thames. And there shall be battles among many kingdoms. That year shall be the bloody field, and lily F.K. shall lose his crown, and therewith shall be crowned the Son of Man K.W., and the fourth year shall be preferred. And there shall be a universal peace over the whole world, and there shall be plenty of fruits; and then he shall go to the land of the Cross"

Cheers, Andy
