Y2K Music

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

My wife just read the 'YOURDANITES REVISITED' post I made.

She interjected: "What would be an appropriate Y2Kn theme - in music?"

Since we're from Iowa, and old farhts, we listen to Bix a lot. (He's from Davenport, Iowa afterall.) Bix was followed by Wagner and the Statler Brothers. How's that for a mixture?

What should the Y2k musical theme be?

I'm sure this will bring some bizarre comments, but go ahead.

(Sorry this is long)

It's kind of obscure so I included lyrics(not every word fits, but bear with me :-)

Queen-The Prophet's Song

Oh Oh people of the earth/Listen to the warning/The seer he said/Beware the storm that gathers here/Listen to the wise man

I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair/Spreading his hands on the multitude there/A man who cried for a love grown stale/And ice cold hearts of charity bare/I watched as fear took the old man's gaze/ Hopes of the young in troubled graves/I see no day, I heard him say/So grey is the face of every mortal/

Oh oh people of the earth/Listen to the warning/ The prophet he said/For soon the cold of night will fall/Summoned by your own hand/

Oh Oh children of the land/Quicken to the new life/Take my hand/Fly and find the new green bough/return like the white dove/

He told of death like a bone white haze/Taking the lost and the unloved babe/Late too late all the wretches run/These kings of beasts now counting their days/From mothers love is the son estranged/Married his own his precious gain/The earth will shake in two will break/and death all around will be your dow'ry/

Oh oh people of the earth/listen to the warning the seer he said/For those who hear and mark my words/listen to the good plan/

Oh Oh -and two by two my human zoo/ They'll be/running for to come/ running for to come/ out of the rain/

Flee for your life/Who heed me not, let all your treasure make you, fear for your life, deceive you not the fires of hell will take you/ Should death await you/

God give you trace to purge this place/And peace all around may be your fortune.

Oh Oh children of the land/love is still the answer, take my hand/The vision fades, a voice I hear/ "listen to the Madman"

But still I fear and still dare not/ Laugh at the Madman-------------

''''''''''' When I first started researching y2k I thought ya'll were nuts. When I left my computer the lyrics from this song ran through my head. "listen to the mad, listen to the mad, listen to the Madman...." I kept digging....and now I too am mad....

The entire Koyannisqatsi movie soundtrack. If you've never heard of that movie, it's a must for Y2Kers. It's the Hopi's take on our Western civilization. Very moving and spooky. You can rent it at most well stocked video stores, but can't buy any more, apparently.

Here are the lyrics to the song "2000 MAN" by the Rolling Stones:

Well, my name is a number, a piece of plastic film, and I grow tiny flowers in my little window sill...

Don't you know I'm the 2000 Man, and my kids they just don't understand me at all...

Well, my wife still respects me, I really misused her, and I'm having an affair with a random COMPUTER...

Don't you know I'm the 2000 Man, and my kids they just don't understand me at all...

Oh, Daddy, be proud of your Planet. Oh, Mommy, be proud of your Sun.

Oh, Daddy, is your brain still flashing, like it did when you were young?

Or did you come down CRASHING, seeing all the things you've done? Oh, it's a big put on...

Oh, Daddy, be proud of your Planet. Oh, Mommy, be proud of your Sun.

And you know who's the 2000 Man, and your kids they just won't understand you at all...

() 1967, Jagger-Richard from the album "Their Satanic Majesties Request." I would suggest you get really stoned, put on your Y2K headphones and listen to this record from beginning to end. You'll be shocked, SHOCKED at relevant it is to this issue. Besides, it's a lot of fun)

Flatt and Scruggs; any of their "Breakdowns".

What else is appropriate for a group which is "headin' fer the hills." I wonder if they wrote and recorded a "Societal" or "Millineal" Breakdown?

I might even have to try and learn the banjo myself. ;<)

This one sounds like it could've been written today, by one of us, today, but notice the date. Hmm..I wonder if Dennis knew something......

Edge of the Century by Dennis DeYoung (c) 1990

Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century

See the world in revolution Spinnin' faster all the time We're headin' for the end of somethin' Just about to step across that line Ohhh, cant you see ? We're starin' in the face of reality Ohhh, and you and me We're livin' on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century

Hear the way the earth is shakin' Feel the rumble miles away Say goodbye to Checkpoint Charlie Walls are fallin' everyday Ohhh can't you see ? Every step we take we're makin' history Ohh baby you and me Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century

You can't turn off the information Can't sit back in your easy chair Just can't ignore a generation Better get ready cause we're almost there Ohhh and we're movin' at the speed of life, yeah Ohhh into a brave new world where the strong will survive And dawn's gonna break and I'll meet you on the other side

(bridge)

You can't stand still while the earth is turnin' Can't take cover till the coast is clear Can't play guitar while Rome is burnin' Look out now cause the future's here Ohhhh And were movin at the speed of life, yeah Ohhhh Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century Livin on the edge on the edge on the edge of the century On the edge.....

Here's an interesting song by Rush. It's unusual song for them, and quite evocative. I'd like your comments thoughts after reading it...

Bravado by Rush, Lyrics by Neil Peart

If we burn our wings Flying too close to the sun If the moment of glory Is over before it's begun If the dream is won -- Though everything is lost We will pay the price, But we will not count the cost

When the dust has cleared And victory denied A summit too lofty River a little too wide If we keep our pride -- Though paradise is lost We will pay the price, But we will not count the cost

And if the music stops There's only the sound of the rain All the hope and glory All the sacrifice in vain [And] if love remains Though everything is lost We will pay the price, But we will not count the cost

Here's another run from Rush. It's from an album called "Roll the Bones"...

Bet Your Life

Just another hunter, like a wolf in the sun Just another junkie on a scoring run Just another victim of the things he has done Just another day -- in the life of a loaded gun

THE ODDS GET EVEN -- You name the game THE ODDS GET EVEN -- The stakes are the same YOU BET YOUR LIFE

Just another winner, pours his life down the drain Just another island in a hurricane Just another loser, like a cat in the rain Just another day -- in the path of a speeding train

THE ODDS GET EVEN -- You name the game THE ODDS GET EVEN -- The stakes are the same YOU BET YOUR LIFE

anarchist reactionary running-dog revisionist hindu muslim catholic creation/evolutionist rational romantic mystic cynical idealist minimal expressionist post-modern neo-symbolist

armchair rocket scientist graffiti existentialist deconstruction primitive performance photo-realist be-bop or a one-drop or a hip-hop lite-pop-metallist gold adult contemporary urban country capitalist

Just another gypsy with a plastic guitar Just another dancer with her eyes on the stars Just another dreamer who was going too far Just another drunk -- at the wheel of a stolen car

THE ODDS GET EVEN -- You name the game THE ODDS GET EVEN -- The stakes are the same YOU BET YOUR LIFE

WOW! Dave, and to all of the rest who really got into this post. If we think there isn't emotion in Y2K (music or otherwise). WOW!

Steppenwolf

Monster. The whole thing. And just about everything else on the album.

But in looking for that CD to get lyrics I can't remember, I came across:

Seal. Crazy. I've had that one on repeat on more than one occasion.

"But we're never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy."
