Time for a cleanup on this message board ?!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Chris,

It's taking a lot longer these days to get to the new messages.

Is there anyway you can have the newer posts at the top of the list in the top frame or does this message board software you're using not give you that option ?!

Maybe its time you wrote your own CGI scripts ?!

Or perhaps just the archiving of some older messages off the top of the listing would help ?!

Definitely got to agree with BeeJay,,,

Starting at the top of the page is a very good idea, and convenient too! :)

How's this?

The board has two modes - thread based (how it was) and Q&A based (how it now is).

I've tried using Q&A based before, and people complained. I can't remember why, but the board's author recommends Q&A based. It allows categorisation of messages, too. Currently there aren't any categories, but I think the board will allow you to make new categories yourselves. This mode also considers messages as 'new' and 'old' and shows the 'new' ones first. Currently, I've set 'new' to mean posted in the last 30 days' - is that too long? What do people think?

You might need to reload the banner frame at the top of my page to get the updated link to the board, but you would have worked that out...

Well - my PC did a disk crash today - I'm hoping it's recoverable, but I don't know, since the active partition is NTFS and I don't know how to edit that when NT won't boot - Win95 can read it (using NTFSDOS from www.sysinternals.com) but won't write it...

Anyways... I've categorised all the old messages on this board - notice how by far the biggest category is 'illegal recordings'... I made up the categories as I went along, and some of them aren't really very good, but the board won't let me rename them now...

When you submit a message, you have the option of choosing which category it will be put into. For the first 7 days it will show up in the 'new messages' section, but after that it will join the other messages in its category, or go into the 'uncategorised' section if you didn't choose one.

I hope this works OK for everyone... It should at least stop the long download times that we were getting.
