Are the income taxes higher, or about the same as they are in New York? What is the percentage?

Average family pays 42% of income to state and federal taxes. We have the 4th highest state taxes and fees behind Alaska, Washington, D.C., and New York. There is a 4% excise tax that is not a sales tax but some economist say equals a 16% sales tax.
